Understanding Volcanic Island Evolution in the Galápagos: A Pilot Implementation of a Small, Multi-Parametric Geophysical Network

Back to Grants Awarded

Karen Harpp, professor of earth and environmental geosciences at ĢƵ; Andrew Bell, senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh; Peter LaFemina, professor doctor of geophysics at the University of Bremen; and Mario Ruiz, director at Escuela Politécnica Nacional, have received a Picker ISI Minor Grant award for $29,990 for their project, “Understanding Volcanic Island Evolution in the Galápagos: A Pilot Implementation of a Small, Multi-Parametric Geophysical Network.”

The project will deploy a single broadband seismic and GNSS station to expand the aperture of the region’s existing geophysical network by approximately 250 km into the unmonitored eastern half of the archipelago. This pilot implementation will provide previously unobtainable constraints on the crustal stresses active across this part of the volcanic chain.
